Bontril use
Bontril is a prescription medication prescribed by doctors for the treatment of obesity.
How Bontril works
Bontril works by stimulating the hypothalamus, the part of your brain the controls hunger. This action decreases your appetite and makes it easier to manage a reduced calorie diet.
How to take Bontril
Take one Bontril tablet once a day on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before mealtime. Swallow Bontril tablets whole. Crushing or chewing them will decrease the effectiveness of the drug. To avoid insomnia, one of the common side effects of Bontril, take your prescribed dose early in the day, preferably at breakfast. DO NOT take Bontril longer than prescribed. Bontril is for short-term treatment of obesity and should not used for more than 12 weeks unless directed by a doctor.
Bontril precautions
Alcohol may increase unwanted side effects of dizziness. While you are taking Bontril you should limit your consumption of wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages. Also, avoid stimulants such as caffeine and/or decongestants. DO NOT take Bontril if you:
- Are using MAO inhibitors to treat depression.
- Have a history of drug or alcohol dependency.
- Are taking other weight loss drugs.
What to tell your doctor
Before taking Bontril inform your doctor about all the nonprescription and prescription medications you are taking. Also, tell your doctor your complete medical history, including if you:
- Have high blood pressure
- Have an overactive thyroid gland
- Are diabetic
- Suffer from emotional problems
- Have glaucoma
- Are pregnant or nursing.
- Bontril side effects
If you experience an allergic reaction or irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, or confusion stop taking Bontril and seek medical attention. Common side effects of Bontril include blurred vision, dizziness, dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, stomach upset or constipation. If less common side effects occur such as nervousness, chest pain, pounding heart, difficulty urinating, mood changes, breathing difficulties, or swelling, stop treatment and consult with your doctor.
